Container Gardening for Baby Food: What to Grow on a Balcony or Patio
March 25, 2026
You do not need a backyard to grow food for your baby. A balcony, patio, or even a sunny windowsill can produce enough to make a real difference in what your child eats.
The best containers
Use pots that are at least 5 gallons with drainage holes. Fabric grow bags work well too and are easy to store when not in use. Avoid terracotta if you tend to forget watering, as it dries out fast.
Top crops for containers
Zucchini
One plant in a 10-gallon pot will produce more than your baby can eat. Ready in 50 days. The single best container crop for BLW because it grows fast, produces heavily, and steams perfectly soft.
Cherry tomatoes
A single indeterminate plant in a 5-gallon pot will fruit all summer. Cut in half lengthwise for babies under 12 months. Choose a variety like Sungold or Sweet Million for maximum sweetness.
Green beans (bush type)
Bush beans need no trellis and fit in a 5-gallon pot. Plant 6-8 seeds per pot. Ready in 50 days. Steam until very soft for a natural BLW finger food shape.
Kale
Grows well in partial shade and tolerates cold. A single plant in a 3-gallon pot produces leaves for months. Strip from the stem and steam for babies.
Carrots
Choose a short variety like Thumbelina or Paris Market for containers. Needs at least 8 inches of soil depth. Ready in 70 days. Garden carrots are sweeter than store-bought.
Herbs (basil, mint, parsley)
A windowsill herb garden adds flavor to baby food without salt. Basil in pesto, mint in yogurt, parsley over vegetables. Herbs are one of the easiest ways to introduce new flavors early.
Container growing tips
- Potting mix, not garden soil. Garden soil compacts in containers and drains poorly. Use a quality potting mix.
- Water daily in summer. Containers dry out much faster than garden beds. Check soil moisture every morning.
- Feed regularly. Container plants exhaust nutrients faster. Use a diluted liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks.
- Full sun matters. Most vegetables need 6+ hours of direct sun. South-facing balconies are ideal.
Timing it right
