The 10 Best First Foods for Baby-Led Weaning
March 15, 2026
Starting solids is one of the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) milestones. If you're following baby-led weaning, choosing the right first foods makes all the difference.
The ideal BLW starter food is soft enough to mash between your fingers, easy to grip in a fist, and unlikely to cause a reaction. Here are ten that check every box.
1. Avocado
Ripe avocado is the gold standard BLW food. It's soft, nutrient-dense, and easy for tiny hands to grip when cut into thick spears. No cooking required.
2. Sweet potato
Roast sweet potato spears until soft through. The natural sweetness appeals to most babies, and the bright orange color means it's packed with beta-carotene. This one grows beautifully in a home garden with a long warm season.
3. Banana
Cut in half and leave part of the peel on for grip. Bananas are soft, portable, and available year-round.
4. Steamed broccoli
The "tree" shape is a natural handle. Steam until very soft, then let it cool. Broccoli is one of the easiest crops to grow at home, ready in about 60 days.
5. Zucchini
A prolific garden crop that's harvest-ready in 45-55 days. Cut into thick sticks and steam or roast until soft. One plant will produce more than your baby can eat.
6. Butternut squash
Roasted squash spears are sweet, soft, and nutrient-rich. Butternut stores well after harvest, so you can grow it in summer and serve it through fall and winter.
7. Pear
Ripe pear cut into spears works raw. For younger babies (6-7 months), steaming softens it further. Pear trees are a longer-term investment but produce for decades.
8. Carrot
Must be cooked very soft for BLW. Roast or steam whole carrots until you can easily pierce them with a fork. Garden carrots are sweeter than store-bought and ready in 70-80 days.
9. Cucumber
For babies 9+ months with a developing pincer grasp. Cut into thick sticks with the skin on for grip. Cucumber grows fast (50 days) and thrives in containers.
10. Green beans
A perfect finger food shape. Steam until very soft. Green beans are one of the easiest garden crops: plant, water, harvest in 50 days. Serve whole for younger babies to grip.
Growing your baby's first foods
Six of these ten foods grow easily at home: sweet potato, broccoli, zucchini, butternut squash, carrot, and green beans. If you time your planting right, the harvest lands exactly when your baby is ready to eat it.
