Saturday Batch Prep: Turn One Garden Harvest into a Week of Baby Meals

March 8, 2026

Saturday morning. The zucchini plant has 4 fruits ready, there are two heads of broccoli, and the carrots need thinning. In 45 minutes, you can turn all of that into a week of baby meals. Here is how.

The gear you need

A large pot for blanching, a bowl of ice water, a sheet pan, and freezer-safe containers or silicone trays. That is it. No baby food maker, no special gadgets.

Step 1: Harvest and wash (5 minutes)

Pick everything that is ready. Wash in cool water. For root vegetables like carrots, scrub with a brush. No need to peel for babies over 9 months if the skin is tender.

Step 2: Prep by age band (10 minutes)

Cut everything to the right shape for your baby's age:

  • 6-8 months: Thick spears (finger-width) long enough to grip. Zucchini sticks, broccoli florets with the stem as a handle, carrot sticks.
  • 9-11 months: Smaller pieces alongside spears. Diced zucchini, small broccoli pieces, carrot coins.
  • 12+ months: Whatever you are eating, cut smaller. Fork-friendly pieces for utensil practice.

Step 3: Blanch and cool (15 minutes)

Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Blanch each vegetable separately:

  • Broccoli florets: 2 minutes
  • Green beans: 3 minutes
  • Carrot sticks: 3-4 minutes (until fork-tender)
  • Zucchini: 1-2 minutes (barely blanched, it gets mushy fast)
  • Peas: 2 minutes

Transfer immediately to ice water for the same amount of time. Drain on a clean towel.

Step 4: Portion for the week (10 minutes)

This week's meals: Spread one portion of each vegetable on a plate and store in the fridge. These last 3-4 days.

The freezer stash: Lay remaining pieces on a sheet pan in a single layer. Freeze for 2 hours, then transfer to labeled bags. This "flash freeze" method keeps pieces separate so you can grab exactly what you need.

Step 5: Thaw and serve during the week

Pull frozen portions the night before and thaw in the fridge. Or microwave for 20-30 seconds and test the temperature. For BLW, you want room temperature or slightly warm, never hot.

The weekly rotation

A typical week from one Saturday batch:

  • Monday: steamed broccoli + sweet potato spears
  • Tuesday: zucchini sticks + peas
  • Wednesday: carrot coins + green beans
  • Thursday: repeat Monday (from fridge portions)
  • Friday: mix from freezer stash + something new from the garden

Keeping track

Mark what you froze and when. Tape a list to the freezer door with crop name and freeze date. (If you use SowAndSpoon, the freezer tracker handles this for you and reminds you before things expire.)
