How to Start Baby-Led Weaning: A Complete Guide for Parents

Baby-led weaning means skipping purees entirely. Your baby picks up real food and feeds themselves from the first meal. Getting there takes some prep: the right food shapes, the right textures, and knowing what's actually dangerous versus what just looks scary.

When to start

Most babies are ready for solids around 6 months. The signs to watch for:

  • Can sit upright with minimal support
  • Has lost the tongue-thrust reflex (doesn't push food out automatically)
  • Shows interest in food (reaching, watching you eat)
  • Can bring objects to their mouth

All four signs should be present. Age alone isn't enough.

First meal setup

Use a sturdy highchair with a footrest. Baby's feet should be flat, not dangling. Strip them down to a diaper if you want to skip the laundry. Put food directly on the tray or use a suction plate.

How to cut food for BLW

At 6 months, babies use a palmar grasp (whole fist). Cut food into thick sticks about the length of your finger, so it sticks out the top of their fist. As the pincer grasp develops (around 9 months), you can offer smaller pieces.

What to offer first

Soft, single-ingredient foods are ideal. Think steamed broccoli florets, ripe avocado spears, roasted sweet potato sticks, or banana. Offer 2-3 options per meal. Don't stress about quantity eaten. For the first few weeks, it's exploration.

Gagging vs. choking

Gagging is normal and expected. It's a safety reflex that moves food forward in the mouth. Baby may cough, sputter, or look alarmed, but their airway is clear. Choking is silent: no sound, no coughing, lips turning blue. Know infant CPR before you start BLW.

Allergen introduction

Current guidelines recommend introducing the top 9 allergens (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, sesame) early and often, starting from 6 months. Introduce one new allergen at a time and wait 3 days before the next to spot reactions.

Common mistakes

  • Starting too early. Wait for all four readiness signs.
  • Offering round, hard foods. Grapes, cherry tomatoes, raw carrot, and whole nuts are choking hazards. Always cut round foods lengthwise.
  • Hovering. Let baby explore at their own pace. Resist the urge to put food in their mouth.
  • Giving up too soon. It can take 10-15 exposures before a baby accepts a new food. Refusal on day one is normal.
