How to Prepare Okra for Baby

Flavor guide

Raw okra is grassy, mild, and lightly vegetal with a firm, seedy interior and the characteristic mucilaginous texture that develops when cut. Fully cooked okra has a tender, soft bite with a mild flavor similar to eggplant or zucchini, and its natural sliminess blends into sauces and stews as a gentle thickener. It pairs naturally with tomato, corn, garlic, cumin, mild chili, chicken broth, and sweet potato.

Trim ends, steam whole pods 8-10 minutes until very soft. The natural tube shape is ideal for BLW, babies can hold the whole pod and gnaw while the soft flesh releases easily. The mucilage (sliminess) is safe and nutritious.

Serving ideas

  • -Boil or steam until very soft, chop finely, and stir into tomato sauce or vegetable mash
  • -Blend cooked okra into a thick pureed soup with sweet potato and corn
  • -Roast until soft and slightly caramelized, then mash into a vegetable base

9 to 11 months

Slice into rounds after steaming, or roast at 425F for 15 minutes until tender. The round slices make good pincer grip practice.

Freezing Okra for baby

Blanch whole pods 3-4 minutes, plunge into ice water, dry completely, freeze on a tray, then bag. Steam from frozen or add directly to soups and stews.

Blanch for 3 minutes before freezing. Keeps for up to 10 months.

Stewed Okra and Tomatoes

From 6 months

Ingredients

  • -1 cup small okra pods, stems trimmed, sliced into rounds
  • -1/2 cup crushed tomatoes (no added salt)
  • -1 small garlic clove, minced
  • -1 tsp olive oil
  • -1/4 cup water

Steps

  1. Heat olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Add okra, tomatoes, and water. Stir to combine.
  3. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until okra is completely soft and the stew has thickened.
  4. For 6-8 months, blend until smooth and serve on a preloaded spoon or stir into soft rice. For 9 months and older, mash with a fork and serve as a soft stew alongside rice or bread strips.

The long cook time is important: 25 to 30 minutes of simmering fully softens the okra and disperses the mucilage into the tomato sauce, creating a smooth, cohesive texture without any stringiness.
