Trim ends, steam whole pods 8-10 minutes until very soft. The natural tube shape is ideal for BLW, babies can hold the whole pod and gnaw while the soft flesh releases easily. The mucilage (sliminess) is safe and nutritious.
Slice into rounds after steaming, or roast at 425F for 15 minutes until tender. The round slices make good pincer grip practice.
Roasted, grilled, sauteed, or in soups and stews. Dry-heat cooking reduces the slimy texture significantly.
Garden notes
The natural finger-food shape makes okra one of the best BLW vegetables, babies can hold the whole pod. Harvest young at 2-4 inches; older pods become fibrous and tough. Loves heat, direct sow after soil reaches 65F. Prolific producer, harvest every 2-3 days to keep the plant productive.
